Folate and pregnancy. Folate and folic acid are important for pregnancy since they can help prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Folate is a B group vitamin needed for healthy growth and development. Increase your folate intake by eating folate-rich foods.
Deficiency of folic acid or folate is associated with anemia and neuropathy in adults, but the most serious neurological sequelae of a maternal folic acid deficiency are neural tube defects such as spina bifida in the newborn.
It is estimated that 5-10% of the population suffer from deficiencies of folic acid due to inadequate dietary intake. Folate deficiency in pregnancy is common and has prompted the recommendation that women should ingest 400 micrograms of folate a day for three months before conception and for the entire course of pregnancy. In countries where folate supplementation is prescribed during pregnancy and staple foods are fortified with folate, the incidence of neural tube defects has decreased dramatically. Folate deficiency may also be caused by the use of anticonvulsants and chronic abuse of alcohol. Folate supplements are usually prescribed to prevent neural tube defects and folate-deficiency anemia of pregnancy.

Vitamin B12 or Cyanocobalamin is essential for the maintenance of myelin (a component of the CNS). Inadequate synthesis of myelin leads to neurological damage. Vitamin B12 deficiency is found to cause neurological and psychiatric problems in adults between 40–90 years of age. It rarely affects people younger than this. The neurological manifestations include myelopathy (disease of the spinal cord), neuropathy (disease of the nerves), sensory disturbances, gait abnormalities, and weakness, while the psychiatric problems range from cognitive and behavioral disturbances to dementia.
Iron and pregnancy
Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a type of blood disorder. The red blood cells in your body contain hemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. Your body needs iron to build enough healthy red blood cells and keep your hemoglobin at the right level. If your body lacks the right amount of iron, you could become anemic.
During pregnancy, the body increases its blood volume by 30-50%. Due to this increase in blood volume, it is important for pregnant women to also increase their intake of folic acid and iron. This might lead you to ask the question on how to treat iron deficiency naturally during pregnancy. Hemoglobin, a protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to your tissues and body needs iron to make more blood to supply oxygen to your baby. You are at increased risk of developing anemia during pregnancy if you:
- Have two closely spaced pregnancies
- Are pregnant with more than one baby
- Are vomiting frequently due to morning sickness
- Don’t consume enough iron
- Have a heavy pre-pregnancy menstrual flow
- Have a history of anemia before your pregnancy
Ferric salts have traditionally not been preferred over ferrous salts as the ferric ion first requires reduction to ferrous form in the intestinal lumen and usually this reducing capacity is not enough to reduce doses of iron therapeutically administered. The bio-availability of iron from ferric salts is 3 to 4 times less than that of ferrous sulphate.
Following oral administration, ferrous bisglycinate is absorbed intact into the mucosal cells of the intestine, and is subsequently hydrolysed into its iron and glycine components. The iron component of 1 ferrous bisglycinate is metabolised like any other source of iron. The solubility of iron from ferrous bisglycinate is not affected by changes in pH. The bioavailability of the ferrous bisglycinate chelate and ferrous sulfate is 91% and 26.7%. Ferrous bisglycinate has a relatively high bioavailability in the presence of dietary inhibitors like tannins and oxalates.
